Ok I'm sorry to tell you this, but i personally think that is a bad idea. Say that you tell him, and he doesnt feel the same way then the great friendship that you have will be ruined because you will never be able to look at him the same way. I tell you from experience because my best guy friend did that to me and i didnt feel the same way. i mean i loved him but a pure love. i still love him, but now we dont talk as much because of the whole situation. so its better to keep it pure and just wait it out if its meant to happen then it will happen. but if you really like this guy you should keep simple.
get a friend to tell him that you do and tell that friend to also ask if he likes you too.
and then after she asks and you and him hang-out act like nothing happened so its not awkward.
