i would like to hang a curtain over the distance of 5 meters (almost). however, i would like to have it open and close from one side to the other! the curtain has rings in them so they hang from a bar (chrome or steel). the problem is this; would i be able to acheive this without resutling in sagging of the bar! coz i dont want to install a supporting hing in the middle, coz otherwise, i wont be able to open it all the way from side to side! what kind of material for the bar should i use and how should install it in order to prevent any lowering or saggging.
thanks guys most appreciated.Have a structural problem...need help and advice! r u good at this sort of thing!?
I'm kind of in agreement in part with ';Happy';
Why not re-think this to have a TRACK, supported at the side that faces the wall; Attached to as many studs as it needs; while allowing a smooth travel line for the 5 meters. Then just use different hooks for the drapery material; designed to ';Ride'; along in the track.
That equates to approx. 220 inches; a pretty long span, no matter how it's supported; given the weight of any bar/track, plus any drapery material hung on it.

Instead of a bar you can use wall mounted hooks (drill in with rawlplugs) then a tension cord. This will mean it never sags. Only thing is to secure those hooks well and use a light weight curtain.
you should be able to if you have a strong enough bar
id say get aluminum with a finish you want and when you install it, bend it upward slightly and fix it to the wall, the slight curve should counter the pull of the curtain
That's one heck of a wide curtain and in order to keep it in one piece, you need one heck of a strong curtain pole or a very, very light weight curtain.
I personally can't see how you will get this to work without some sagging when the curtain is closed.
A wooden pole must be a no no, no matter how thick because wood is by nature a flexible material.
The only thing that might work is a pole made from wraught iron as this does not flex. The disadvantage is that it is very heavy, not easy to come by and very expensive, you might even have to have one specially made.
